During the Japanese occupation in the early 1940s, Koreans were banned from speaking and teaching their own language in schools. Korean Language Society representative Ryu Jung Hwan (Yoon Kye Sang) leads his society members to secretly collect vocabulary and dialects in order to publish a Korean language dictionary. Illiterate Kim Pan Soo (Yu Hae Jin) joins the society by chance and realizes his love for the language after learning it. Together, Pan Soo and the scholars risk their lives to save the Korean language from extinction.
