Known for bleak arthouse films like Desert Dream and Dooman River, Korean-Chinese filmmaker Zhang Lu offers a lighter story in his latest drama Gyeongju starring Park Hae Il (A Muse) and Shin Min Ah (Naked Kitchen). Amid the protagonists' romantic undertones and offbeat fixation with an erotic painting, the film still touches on the director's pet themes of dislocation, cross-cultural identities and personal and social trauma. The title Gyeongju refers to the film's setting, a picturesque coastal city in southeastern Korea with deep historical roots.
Beijing-based professor Choi Hyeon (Park Hae Il) returns to Korea to attend a funeral. A conversation incites his memories of a trip to Gyeongju that he took years ago, in particular an erotic folk painting on the wall of a teahouse he visited. Choi Hyeon impulsively detours to Gyeongju, but when he arrives at the teahouse, he finds that it has a new proprietor, a beautiful woman named Yoon Hee (Shin Min Ah), and that the painting is no longer there.
