Trying his hand at another B&W historical biopic after Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, director Lee Joon Ik goes back to the early 19th century and the life of Joseon-era scholar Jeong Yak Jeon in the award-winning period film The Book of Fish. Portrayed by Sol Kyung Gu (The Merciless) in the film, Jeong Yak Jeon was exiled to remote Heuksando Island during the Catholic Persecution of 1801. During his time there, he wrote a comprehensive book titled Jasaneobo to help people understand the different fish and marine life of the island's waters. Byun Yo Han (Will You Be There?) plays the fictional character of Chang Dae, an ambitious young fisherman whom Jeong meets and mentors in exchange for his fishing knowledge.
The Book of Fish has garnered a score of awards in Korea including the Grand Prize at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards, Best Director at the 30th Buil Film Awards, and Best Film at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. Sol Kyung Gu received Best Actor prizes from the 42nd Blue Dragon Film Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards and Korean Film Writers Association Awards, while Byun Yo Han won Best Actor at the Busan Film Critics Awards.
