Description
Blockbuster director Yoon Je Kyun (Haeundae) pays tribute to his parents and the sacrifices of their generation with Ode To My Father, a big-budget epic melodrama charting the ups and downs of one family against the tumult of modern Korean history. Acclaimed actor Hwang Jung Min (Fists of Legend) plays a simple, warmhearted man who travels far and wide and experiences myriad trials and tribulations, all for the sake of his family and a childhood promise that would shape a lifetime. Spanning from the Korean War to the present day, the heartfelt tearjerker was a massive hit with audiences and turned into the second biggest Korean film of all time. Besides Hwang Jung Min, the film also co-stars the award-winning lineup of Kim Yoon Jin (The Neighbors), Jung Jin Young (Gangnam Blues), Jang Young Nam (A Werewolf Boy), Oh Dal Soo (Miracle in Cell No. 7) and Ra Mi Ran (Hope). Ode to My Father swept the top prizes at the 52nd Daejong Film Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

 

In December 1950, Duk Soo (Hwang Jung Min) and his family were one of many fleeing south in the wake of the Korean War. During the evacuation, Duk Soo, a young boy at the time, loses sight of his little sister. His father stays to search for her, and entrusts the rest of the family in Duk Soo's care. From that day on, Duk Soo would become the head of the household, toiling endlessly at all kinds of jobs in order to support the family and to keep his promise with his father. That promise would bring him as far as the coal mines of Germany and wartorn Vietnam, as he bears all in the hopes of providing his family a better life.
