In 2008, writer-director Inudo Isshin adapted Oshima Yumiko's pseudo-autobiographical manga series into Gu Gu The Cat, starring Koizumi Kyoko as a manga artist getting over the death of her beloved cat. Six years later, Inudo returns to Kichijoji and expands the story's world with a five-episode mini-series for WOWOW. Miyazawa Rie replaces Koizumi in the series, playing the lonely author who breaks out of her grief – and her own shell – when she picks up a stray cat in a neighborhood park. A subtly charming study of loneliness and the importance of companionship in the big city, Gu Gu, the Cat reinvents the story in a refreshing, whimsical fashion.
