Based on Ryoo's own 1998 short film which became a big online hit and helped jumpstart his career, Dachimawa Lee both lampoons and revels in the genre with its deadpan histrionics, predictably melodramatic storyline, deliberately mistimed dialogue, and over-the-top action scenes played for both laughs and thrills.
Character actor Lim Won Hee (Le Grand Chef) reprises his role as Korea's Austin Powers, Dachimawa Lee, the legendary spy who makes bad guys tremble in their shoes and women swoon at his feet - average looks notwithstanding. Ryoo Seung Wan enlists the usual suspects - action director Jung Doo Hung (The City of Violence) and younger brother Ryoo Seung Bum (Crying Fist), who takes a supporting role as a baddie - plus actresses Kong Hyo Jin (M) and Park Si Yeon (A Love) who all ham it up with straight faces.
Set during the Japanese occupation, the film follows super spy Dachimawa Lee in his latest adventure to recover a stolen national treasure, the Golden Buddha. The mission turns into a globe-trotting, multi-lingual topsy-turvy roller coaster of challenges and setbacks as the stakes stack higher and higher when a female agent and a top-secret list of Korean spies also go missing. Can Dachimawa Lee crack the conspiracy and save the day?
